Goal:

Create a stand for an LED light to serve as a microscope lighting device.

Requirements:

  • Adjustable height for fine-tuning light position.
  • Rotational capability for slight lighting adjustments.
  • Securely hold the light to prevent movement during use.

Design Highlights:

  • Ball Joint: Achieved three rotational degrees of freedom after iterative interference testing. Started with a medium transition fit (0.02 mm), eventually achieving a zero-clearance fit due to the 3D-printed texture.
  • Shaft Fit: Iterated from a medium transition fit (0.02 mm) to a light transition fit (0.01 mm) for successful function.
  • Pressure Relief Slots: Prevented material fracture and stress concentrations by providing pathways for controlled deformation during assembly.
  • Height Adjustment: Integrated 30 mm of adjustable height to enable precise orientation of the light source.

The final design meets all functional requirements, offering:

  • Three rotational degrees of freedom via the ball joint.
  • 30 mm of adjustable height for fine-tuning.
  • A secure and stable fit for the specific LED light.
